友人や家族連れで楽しめる博物館や美術館。入場料金の有無やコインロッカーの使用など覚えておきたい英会話フレーズはたくさんあります。

なお、博物館は「museum」、美術館は「art museum(gallery)」です。

博物館・美術館の営業時間について

□What time do you open?
(何時に開きますか?)

(朝9時に開きます)

■We are open Monday through Thursday. We are closed on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
(営業は月曜日から金曜日までで、金曜日と土曜日、日曜日は閉まっています)

「Are you open?」と「Do you open?」はどちらも文法的に正しいですが、若干ニュアンスが異なります。というのも、お店などを開けるという意味での「open」には形容詞と動詞があり、前者の形容詞の場合は「期間」を表すのに対して、後者の動詞の場合はある「時点」を表します。

例えば、
「When are you open?」と聞くと、期間なので「We’re open Monday through Friday」になりますが、
「When do you open?」と聞くと、時点なので「We open at 9:00am」とある時間を言います。

少しややこしいですが、微妙にニュアンスが異なるので知っておくと便利です。

「just」を加えることで、「とにかく!」というニュアンスを与えます。平坦に言うのではなく、感情を込めて言いましょう。

「from bottom of my heart」＝心の底から、と言うイディオムです。

for ages(for a age、in ages) = 長い間。「a long time」とも言えます。
久しぶりに会った友人に、Hey, I haven’t seen you in ages(こんにちは、長い間見てなかったよ〜!)。

□I think this painting looks a little bit dark.
(この絵画は少し暗いと思います)

□This painting makes me think of when I was in school.
(この絵画は、学生の頃を思い出させます)

□This painting reminds me of my school trip to the most famous art museum in Japan.
